A birth chart is the sky over your birthplace, stopped at the minute you were born. Three details: your date of birth, your time of birth, and your place of birth, each doing a different job. The date and the place settle where every planet stood and which spot on Earth the sky is drawn from. The time is what places the houses and your rising sign, both of which move through the day, so two births in the same city hours apart come out as different wheels. Without a time you still get a chart. The planets hold their signs and the reading still stands; the houses and the Moon come out approximate rather than wrong. If you want the exact minute, a birth certificate or a relative who was there is usually the most reliable source.

Read a chart in layers, not all at once. The three points astrologers reach for first are the Sun, the Moon and the rising sign: your core identity, your inner emotional world, and the first impression you make on a room. Together they give a fast read long before the rest of the chart makes sense. After that, take one planet at a time. Note the sign it sits in, then the house it landed in: the sign gives the drive its flavor, the house decides where you meet it. Aspects come last, once the placements hold on their own, because they describe how the placements talk to each other rather than what any one of them is.
